Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The preservative suppresses microbial growth inside the vial, so the same vial can be drawn from repeatedly across a working window of roughly 28 days from first puncture when held at controlled room temperature. Plain sterile water carries no preservative and is intended for single use once opened.
